About
The communities of Walkerville, Walkerville Manor, Walker’s Fruit Farms, Homestead Apple Orchards, Golfview, Blignautsrus, Hartzenbergfontein, Drumblade, Blue Saddle Ranches, and Savannah City — with De Deur to the south and Eikenhof to the north — comprise the greater Walkerville area. It lies in Gauteng, South Africa’s smallest and most densely populated province, approximately 35 kilometres south of Johannesburg.
Walkerville may be reached via the R82 highway (through Southgate, Mondeor, Kibler Park, and Eikenhof) or via the R59 (Walkerville turn-off after Kliprivier). It offers rural tranquillity within easy reach of Johannesburg’s urban sprawl.
The area is predominantly agricultural, with a strong sense of community. The De Deur Flea Market runs every Saturday on Cross Road, adjacent to De Deur Auctioneers. Birdlife is abundant — finches, Cape robins, African hoopoes, barn owls, and African orioles have all been spotted in local gardens. The Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, a hiker’s paradise, lies just outside Heidelberg and covers 12,000 hectares of trails ranging from a few hours to several days.
Walkerville has no shortage of history, and its streets are witness to some fine surviving examples of historical buildings.
