The 14th Annual Tour de Walkerville will take place on Saturday, 1st May 2010
As the local saying goes “Worker’s Day is Walker’s Day in Walkerville”
Thirteen years ago the first Tour de Walkerville raised a few hundred rand for a local charity, and an annual event was born. This is Walkerville’s biggest fund raising event of the year, by Walkerville and for Walkerville! “Foreigners” are also very welcome, and the past few years have seen more people crossing the Eikenhof border to join us for a fun family day. Our goal this year is to once aagain fulfil the late Alex Davis (Chairman for the 11th Tour de Walkerville) wish to raise enough money to be able to give every charity in Walkerville a cheque for a few thousand rand. Our local charities work tirelessly to assist those less fortunate than most of us. From cats and dogs, to children and the elderly. With the tough economic times we are currently in, more are in need than usual and our local charities need every cent we can raise for them.
All the money raised from the walker’s entry fees, participation fees from the venues that host the walk (Yes, they have to pay to be a venue!), as well as donations from local businesses and other generous individuals goes to the charities listed on the Local Charities page.
Open from 07h30 for registration in the parking lot outside the Walkerville Friendly Grocer. (coffee and breakfast will be available at Ticino’s)
The walkers will depart at 9am
Get your tickets in advance at any of the participating venues: Canterbury Country Restaurant, Deep South Pub, Fine & Country, Johnny Walker Pub & Grill, Magic’s Pub, Serendipity Book Exchange and Ticino’s
R20 entry per person
Support your school and get tickets from Aloe Ridge Primary or Michael Rua — all the children’s entry fees go to the school!
Each participating venue will have: Lucky Draws, Entertainment,
food and water provided for horses & dogs
Enter a float - the more outlandish the better!
Our official sponsors for the 2010 Tour de Walkerville are the Walkerville Friendly Grocer
and Fine & Country
Also watch out for us outside the Friendly Grocer on Saturday mornings during April. You may also sign up on the morning of the walk but please get there early. Registration starts at 7.30am and the Tour will kick off at 8.30am. Marshals will be on hand to get everyone off to a smooth start and assist along the way. All venues will have water on hand for horses and dogs. Please remember that if you do bring your dog on the walk, it must be on a leash, and be socialised.
Tractor / Truck floats (or any other unusual vehicle) and Horse & Carriages are invited to take part - decorate your tractor or truck, spruce up your horse carriage and come join in the fun! Entry fee remains R20 per person on the float. Quads please note - no under age drivers will be allowed to take part if they are not accompanied by their parents, and appropriate safety gear is a must! Horse riders, cyclists and bikers and also encouraged to join us. The route has changed from last year and is 11.5kms (should take an average walker about 6 hours with the stops) Great new MC will keep you moving and laughing.
If you are not able to make the walk, you may still make a donation - please call Elaine on 082 573 2780 to arrange a meeting or e-mail info@walkervillesa.co.za.
Each year we approach sponsors to donate prizes so that we can make up little hampers for the lucky ticket holders on each stop of the walk. Something from your stock or a gift voucher would be most appropriate as a prize. Our fund raising number is 054-705. The names of the sponsors are always mentioned during the lucky draw, and off course you will also be mentioned in the Community News. We hope that you will support us in our effort to recognise the enthusiasm and generosity of the hundreds of walkers, who while having a great day, also manage to raise several thousands of rands for our local charities.
If you would like to make a monetary contribution to the fund raising efforts, please contact Elaine Potgieter on 082 573 2780.
Seriously though ….. just how many people living in our area need help? Far more than we realise and with the tough economic times we are in, more are in need than usual. (see our website www.walkervillesa.co.za/clubs.html for a list of good causes that need your support)
Registration of Local Charities
If your charity is already listed on this website, you are automatically entered in the draw. All other local charities (within the greater Walkerville area) are urged to register their details at info@walkervillesa.co.za.
Remember if you’re not in it, you can’t win it!
Sincere thanks to the sponsors of prizes, the generous donors, the venues that made a great effort to ensure a successful event, the TDW Committee & the Walkerville Sector Police for their hard work, the marshals that kept everyone going in the right direction, and of course the Walkers!
